Roof underlayment is a water-resistant or waterproof layer installed directly on the roof deck, underneath the shingles, that acts as a secondary barrier against water, wind-driven rain, and ice damming. It matters because shingles alone aren’t fully waterproof. Wind can lift them, nail holes create tiny entry points, and ice can back up under the edges. Underlayment is what actually keeps water out when the shingles above it are compromised.

Why Does Roof Underlayment Matter?
